I’ve been icing again. My nephew’s birthday was last month. He still thinks trains are the best thing ever, and Thomas the Tank Engine
is the best of the lot. Wanting to cut down on the piles of icing these cakes
use, I thought I’d try a simpler round cake this time, with an inedible cake
topper/toy. This led me to bothering all the seriously awesome staff in toy
stores around the region.
I really should know better than to leave something to the last minute, but there I was the day before the party calling around asking the bemused staff in every store (yes, really, every store) if they had a plastic number three ‘Henry’ engine. Turns out the closest was in Palmerstone North, so I made do with a numberless Ferdinand instead.
I’m pleased with the cake anyway. All the icing is butter
cream, I piped the tracks with chocolate butter cream – cool, right?
Cake under construction: The bridge buttresses are made from the cake trimmings, with a lot of icing holding them together, and the bridge itself is fruit leather. |
Altogether fun to make, fun to see and fun to eat |
